Our Five Initiatives

As a new, multi-faceted animal welfare organization, the mission of The Oasis Animal Sanctuary, Inc. is to relieve the suffering of abandoned, stray, neglected and abused companion animals, horses, and Other Pets.
Our Five Initiatives define who we are …

  1. Oasis is envisioned to be a facility of hope, healing and second chances.  Too many shelters resort to extermination for population control, calling it “euthanasia”.  Oasis is a "no-kill" sanctuary, where euthanasia will only be performed to end the suffering for which there is no end, except in death.  Therefore, our first initiative is to routinely transfer those adoptable animals scheduled for euthanasia at other local shelters to our facility for the purpose of marketing to adoptive or foster families, service groups, or breed-specific organizations. (These animals will not be sent to laboratories or medical research centers.)  We anticipate most of our dogs and cats coming from these sources, although it is expected that some will come in directly via the general public.  Another benefit to this approach is that other shelters’ morale may improve due to the decline in their kill rates.

  2. Oasis is dedicated to help relieve animal suffering by attacking part of the problem at its root cause, overpopulation.  This is why our second initiative is a spay and neuter assistance program for people who need financial assistance with having their pet(s) sterilized.  A second tier in this initiative provides that companion animals leaving our facility will be sterilized prior to their departure, to ensure that they will not reproduce and continue the cycle of overpopulation.

  3. Oasis understands that in order to prevent the continuation of abuse and suffering, the public must be made aware of its ugly presence and educated in how to break its destructive cycle.  This is why our third initiative is to develop an education program that will be taken to schools and community gatherings, for the purpose of enlightening the public on the plight of homeless pets, how to care for companion animals, the many benefits of pet sterilization, and New Jersey wildlife in general.   Furthermore, a classroom within the Sanctuary will provide a place for groups of children or adults to visit and enjoy an on-site learning experience.

  4. The Oasis founders have a deep love and appreciation for New Jersey’s State animal, the Horse, and find neglect or abuse of these magnificent creatures abominable.  Additionally, Oasis is concerned with the plight of other farm inhabitants living in the most inhumane conditions.  Therefore, our fourth initiative is to work with local animal welfare agencies having the power to legally confiscate these pitiful creatures, and provide a safe haven for them until legal ownership can be relinquished.  We will provide professional (basic) training for horses needing behavioral adjustments in order to better their chances of being adopted by a family or service organization, and they will not be adopted out to carriage-ride businesses.

  5. Oasis wishes to retire those creatures, including certain birds of prey, which can no longer perform educational services in other organizations due to age or infirmity.  Many of these beautiful animals are simply “put down” after they are unable to earn their keep.  Oasis recognizes that there are many others that have endured inhumane living conditions and survived to tell the tale.  This is why the fifth initiative is to provide a permanent, loving home to as many as possible, of those too old, too sick, or too traumatized to be adopted, fostered, or relocated.

These five initiatives will consume enormous amounts of time, energy and resources, but Oasis will go further.   In time, we hope to create a pet therapy program for children in hospitals and elderly shut-ins, to purchase a mobile adoption unit to advertise adoptable animals at community affairs, and to create an on-site foster care center for pets of people seeking to escape an abusive spouse but would not because there is no other alternative to leaving their pet(s) behind in that abusive environment.
